What do Lays' West Coast Truffle Fries taste like?

More specifically, do they taste like the Creamy Forest Mushroom Lays sold in Eastern Europe? Thanks.

I haven't had them but here's a review from one of my favorite websites. It sounds like they are pretty cheesy.

And based on this review of the mushroom chips, it doesn't sound to me like they are similar. But now I want to try them!

So weird- I tried these today! I'm not a huge chip fan, but if I didn't know they were truffle fry chips I would've said they were sour cream and onion. They were good but not different [to my totally untrained taste buds] and definitely not mushroomy.

They taste like sour cream and onion chips, pretty much.

They do have a reasonably fungal earthy taste. Not like cream of mushroom soup, though.

Best answer: No they don't. I've had both and the forest mushroom ones are so good. The truffle ones are... Just kinda cheesy tasting like a sour cream+cheese and onion. (Now I want prawn cocktail lays)

Response by poster: Thanks Chasles. I like the Creamy Forest ones a lot. Since I don't care for chips in general, I didn't want to waste money if they weren't similar.

I was so disappointed by them. I, too, thought they tasted just like sour cream and onion. Seriously, not even like fancy sour cream and onion , just regular boring chips.

As a sidebar, I had a chance to try the new Lays Reuben chips, and they taste bizarrely like an actual Reuben. Like, convincingly meaty. I wouldn't say it's especially good, but it's worth tracking down a bag for the experience alone.

One thing I found with the truffle chips is that they had this weird bitter, cheesy, oily aftertaste that would just stay with me, for up to 10 minutes after I stopped eating the chips. While the initial eating of the chip was fine, I grew to really hate this aftertaste.

I just had these last night, too. I agree that they are sour cream and onion-y, but there's a strong foretaste of mushroom. Like, your first little nibble in your mouth. Very earthy. There's something about the aftertaste that makes me feel like I just actually had fries.

Itaxpica is exactly right about the Rueben ones. It's eerie.

I've also had the southern biscuits and gravy, which I think are more like sour cream and onion than these truffle ones.

I really love Lay's crazy flavors.

I didn't care for the biscuits and gravy flavor however the winner of the previous round of the flavor challenge, Wasabi Ginger, is exceedingly good.
