My TV won't turn on remotely.

Our Tivo and TV remotes stopped operating our television. I can operate it with the physical buttons on the TV. I have checked the batteries and the connections and tried resetting the remotes to no avail. Any ideas?

We have an LG TV (it's a 3D model. I think we've had it two years?). It has a magic remote. We don't normally use that remote, though - we have a tivo, and have that remote programmed to run the TV.

Today the volume and the power buttons on the Tivo remote stopped working with the TV. The remote works fine for the Tivo itself, but won't power the television. I tried reprogramming the Tivo remote to the TV, thinking my kids messed up the code somehow, but couldn't get any of the codes to work.

The magic remote was working the volume for the TV but not the power. I tried resetting the magic remote, since we just replaced the batteries, but I can no longer get it to register to the TV.

I can turn the TV on and off with the button on the physical TV set. I have dusted the TV and its surroundings. There's nothing blocking the sensor. I've googled. I suppose I'll call LG tomorrow to see what they say but in the meantime, is there something I'm missing that's a likely culprit?

Mine does this periodically and is fine once I unplug it for a while. I have no idea why.

This sounds like the kind of stupid stuff my samsung "smart" tv does.

Unplugging and holding in the power button for like 30 seconds, then leaving it unplugged for like a half hour is a good one(it's depressing, but this is documented to work on multiple forums).

Another one i've had to do is dig into the menus and do the "setup" and start from scratch settings wise, or the factory reset(check the manual).

If it's a "magic remote" model, i'm assuming it's a smart tv? I'd also check to see if there's any updates available for the firmware, in the software-update-checker buried in the menus.

I also had a stupid problem with the samsung version of the "magic remote" somehow just... screwing itself up internally and causing tons of problems. Eventually i pulled the batteries out and buried it in my desk with all the other dongles and remotes i don't use, and i've been happier ever since. It seems like it was literally jamming the remote functionality sometimes(and since it was bluetooth only using its IR emitter to control say, a cablebox, it could do this even while under the couch)
