Photography competition rules

We want to set up a photography competition for our students. Our goal is to stimulate them to take pics of the class (all adults) doing class related activity. What rules do we need to have in place to protect ourselves and to ensure a transparent and fair competition?

We will provide a cash prize. We hope to use some of the photos for later promotional activity but will not use any photos without permission of the copyright owner. The photo taking will not be credit bearing though a sensible student might well use their pictures to enhance a report. We are in the UK.

Best answer: It's not just the copyright owner. It's the photo subjects. You will need a model release from each person photographed as a point of UK law. There are UK specific releases readily available.

Best answer: Use a system like Entry Thingy for the entries so you can do the jurying blind. I'd have multiple jurors as well.

Best answer: Get impartial third-party judges who are qualified to judge but who aren't involved with the class. Maybe a panel of other art teachers?

Response by poster: Thanks all, that's exactly the sort of advice I need. I should be able to find a photography tutor to judge. The permission thing is very useful too, DarlingBri.
