Where to get a reputable back/shoulder waxing in Manhattan?

I'm a guy and I want a waxing. Two-part question: (1) Do I have to be careful where I get this done, or can I go to any old place? (2) If I need to go somewhere reliable, any recommendations in Manhattan?

I'll answer (2): I really like Shobha. I'm not a guy, but they've always done a great job on my, um, areas. I've always gone to the one in SoHo, on Broadway just below Houston.

I've seen it on so many salon waxing menus that I don't think it's that unusual a request for the average salon. I usually go to the bloomie nails in chelsea but they are all over and the level of service is pretty consistent.

I'm not sure if you're asking if this is an unusual request or if you find reputable places. The issue with not-great waxing places is that you're more likely to end up with ingrown hairs due to the wax breaking off the hair rather than ripping it out from the root. (Plus general spa/salon-hygiene concerns.)

The latter.

In that case, yes, I think you should be careful where you go. Not paranoid, but I would pick a place based on reviews or recommendations, not just because you happen to walk past it on the way to work or whatever.

European Wax Center has a few locations in Manhattan. They have a proprietary hard wax and impeccable hygiene standards.

Guy here, who has gotten waxed in two locations in Manhattan: Bliss and Uni K. Bliss is really upscale, but I like Uni K a lot more. They use a harder wax, which hurts a lot less when getting yanked off and also seems to do a lot less damage to my skin. Bliss's, by contrast, I believe is a soft wax. It really hurt and left the skin in my sensitive areas a wreck.

Uni K is also much cheaper, but it seems very clean and reliable. So yeah, on that note, definitely do not just wander in to any old place. One more Uni K plus is that it has many more locations, so odds are you'll be able to find one near-ish to you.

I don't know where in Manhattan you are located, but I can highly recommend Natalina at the Upper East Side location of UniK wax. She's very good, professional, and friendly. I have EXTREMELY sensitive skin, and I have found her the closest thing I've ever experienced to truly painless. (I am not a man, and I have only had eyebrow and upper lip waxed.)
