Each letter in each question stands for a 1-digit number. In each question no two letters may stand for the same number. Find a value for each letter ILL + CUP = EACH Using Numbers 8,9,4,1,5,0,6,2

She had two other questions which we figured out. here they are:

Question !

TOO
+ JET
_______
HAND

Using numbers 1,0,3,6,2,7,5,4

Answer

322
+ 743
_______

1065

Question 2

NET
+ DAD
______

GIRL

Using numbers 8,9,1,3,7,6,0,5,2

Thanks

522 + 968 = 1490 ? I think?

I believe there are multiple answers. If you want to try and solve it from a hint, my solution starts with 466 for ILL.

Also, I used a couple of tricks that may be useful to point out to your daughter if she doesn't know them already. First, the E in each has to be a 1, because the numbers we're adding are both three digits, and it's impossible to add two numbers each less than 1,000 and get 2,000 or more. (I suppose you could stick a 0 in that spot, but that seems like cheating.) Second, the P in CUP can't be a 0, because L + P = H, and a number plus zero always equals the same number.

That's not enough to get the answer, these kinds of heuristics are the real take away from an exercise like this.

My terrible, hacky Python script managed to brute force these two solutions:

566 + 482 = 1048
466 + 592 = 1058

Hope this helps!

un petit cadeau's first solution does not work, as 9 isn't used and 8 can't map to both U and H.
