Cheap, safe accomodation near Hyatt Regency Miami; recommendations?

Please help me find a place to stay within walking distance of the Hyatt Regency Miami between 4th and 8th November. Slight snowflakes inside.
So I screwed up and didn't get my ducks in a row in time, and now the conference hotel for the American Translators Association conference in November is fully booked. I'd planned to split the cost with a roommate, but that may not be possible, and there's no way I can afford the room on my own for four days even at the conference rate. So. Time to look for alternatives!
I'm looking for hostels or Airbnb, ideally walking distance from the Hyatt Regency, for under $100 a night. I don't smoke and rarely drink.
I'm not a night owl; the latest I'll be back is probably 10 or 11. Is it a safe neighbourhood to walk around in? I don't mind taking cabs if necessary. Also, any recs for food (veggie-friendly would be fantastic but not necessary) in the area? Cheap is good.
Also, how much of a pain is it to cancel an Airbnb booking?
