User not able to get/send mail thru OS X Mail but they can w iOS Mail

Email server running Novell Groupwise...
User(s) are able to read write w the iOS client, using "mobilemail.XYZ.edu" as the server. But...
When I plug the same info into OS X's account info pane, I'm able to set up the account, but Mail.app can not seem to connect or sync with the mail server; it tries, but times out.
Password is correct? Is it a POP or IMAP mail server? Can any other account using a desktop mail client access a mobilemail account? There might be some issue revolving around the account seemingly being a mobile-specific account. Might there be a separate login for non-mobile clients?

Also...My experience with other big-brand enterprise email servers and OSX, is that there is often a web-based client one must use instead of a general mail client like mail.app.

Response by poster: I was afraid you were going to say that (webmail). It just doesn't make sense though. I thought email was platform agnostic-- just a question of having the correct server information and port numbers..?
I do see a lot of chatter about trying to "connect via IMAP" ... which seems here nor there. Why would that make a diff? IMAP as opposed to what? POP3?
