I've joined a club and am learning to sail in a hands on environment. I like to read more about sailing and am looking for good books that have narrative AND instruction.

I've read "Invitation to Sailing" by Brown and it was good and short. It focused on small boat sailing and racing. I'm now reading "Fundamentals of Sailing, Cruising, & Racing" by Colgate and it also seems good. Both lack narrative.

Lin & Larry Pardey's books.

I used to have a ton of exactly what you're looking for, but dumped them all when we moved aboard. I'll try to think of some titles.

Look for coastal cruising books, and gunkhole guides.

Best answer: Bob Bond's The Handbook of Sailing is comprehensive, well written, well illustrated, and covers almost anything you'd want to know. I'd been sailing and working on boats for many years and still found this book to be really helpful.

Best answer: Seconding Sailing Fundamentals by Jobson. We used it as our text for some of the ASA certification courses we took through our club. You're gonna love sailing!

Sailing For Dummies was written by a couple of top flight sailors.
