LA shopping/activies (specifically outdoor basketball, toys)

Where should I look for toys that I wouldn't find in toy stores outside of such a large, diverse city? I'm also interested in watching the Venice Basketball League championship game tomorrow. What do I need to know about that?

These laser cut cardstock puzzles that I saw on Tested are a good example of what I'm looking. The presenter said he found them in bookstore in San Francisco’s Japantown. I don't see them on US eBay or Amazon. I can only find them on foreign sites that don't ship internationally. Where would I go if I wanted a decent chance of finding them in Los Angeles? I’m specifically interested in these, but I figure a place that carried these would likely carry other interesting toys that I wouldn’t find otherwise. I like this sort of thing - something that takes a little time to put together. Also, science-y toys. Finally, luggage space is precious, so if I buy something it couldn't be much bigger than these.

I didn't see any helpful information about watching tomorrow's VBL championship game. Are there tickets? Where do I get them? Do I just show up tomorrow?

For the cards I would check with Giant Robot on Sawtelle first and then the other nearby stores.

There's a bigger Japanese community than Sawtelle downtown -- Little Tokyo. There are lot of shops filled with stuff like that.

The bookstore in SF Japantown is Kinokuniya. They have lots of neat little gifts like that, and they have a location in LA (in Little Tokyo, IIRC).

Three weeks ago we stumbled across Venice Basketball League on a day-trip to Venice Beach - we're from the UK and we'd never heard of VBL, but it looked cool so we just sat down and watched a game. It was great. There was a series of games going on and it looked like people were just strolling up, sitting down and watching for a while and then going on their way. Nobody was checking for tickets and I assumed it wasn't that kind of event.

That was on a regular weekend, though, and if this weekend is a championship game, I guess it could be different.

OP, to clarify, Giant Robot was a specific suggestion to call but yes, Little Tokyo is definitely bigger than The Little Osaka area around Sawtelle.
