Interview for a private chef position - what should I wear?

I need some help selecting an outfit for an interview which will be in the potential clients apartment.

I have an interview coming up for a private chef position in NYC. It's going to be for an elderly couple, 20-30 hours a week. The interview is in the couple's apartment, and their two children will be there too. I'm an currently attorney and have never worn anything but a suit to an interview but I feel like a suit may be overdoing it in this situation.

Should I dress down slightly? Maybe a suit without the tie? Or would something more causal be more appropriate, such as dark jeans with a nice shirt. Any advice will be much appreciated!

Best answer: Wear the best version you have of what you'd be wearing to work.

Best answer: I've been to this interview. Wearing whites is a bit much; I'd suggest slacks, shirt, tie, especially given that the couple is elderly and likely more traditional/formal. Not jeans.

Best answer: Slacks, shirt tie, nice shoes not sneakers. If the couple wasn't elderly you might get away with dark jeans, but dressing too nice is a safer bet than dressing too casually in an interview, it shows you are taking it seriously.

Best answer: Yeah, don't show up in whites, but be comfortable enough to do a little cooking, they may ask you to whip up something simple to taste.

Best answer: Private chef? In NYC? And for an older couple, too? I'd wear the suit.

Best answer: Are there chef-jacket shaped things that are not "full whites"? I am thinking you want to look calm, and competent, and ready to Chef at a moment's notice.

Response by poster: Thanks for all the input! I think I will err on the formal side and go with slacks, nice shirt, tie, and possibly a blazer depending on the weather.
