Babette's Feast c 2015

I'm traveling to France this September with my mother and we're going to be there during the Fête de la Gastronomie, which is great! Except that I don't know what we should do or how we should do it.
I'm hoping someone has experience here and can give advice about:
-Which events are worth it
-Which events to avoid
-What we can't miss
-How to search that website without getting constant 404s (and yes, I tried the English version of the site)
We're interested in value and experience and are open to pretty much anything. We don't have any food/drink restrictions.
I should add, I know very (very) minimal French and my mother knows none, so if you think a language barrier would be a major issue, please let me know.
