Will I see increased performance if I buy a new cable modem?

My internet service is the "Internet Premier" tier from Cox which is a 100Mbps plan. I currently have an (Motorola) ARRIS SurfBoard SB6121. Would I see increased performance in my current plan if I upgraded to an ARRIS SurfBoard SB6141?

Cox recommends a DOCSIS 3.0 8x4 channel according to this page. Which I assume means 8 downstream channels and 4 upstream channels.

My current modem lists 4 downstream and 4 upstream. The other model I mentioned is 8 downstream and 4 upstream. Will I notice a speed difference if I bought the SB6141?

If I'm understanding the channels correctly, each channel can support 38 Mbps downstream, so wouldn't a 100Mbps connection be covered with 4 downstream channels?

Have you run a speed test such as Speakeasy or Ookla to see what performance you actually are getting?

Best answer: Not really at that speed. I recently looked into the same two modems and I did go with the 6141 because it is more future-proof but the 6121 is 10/100/1000 which means it will support up to 160 download which is above the speed you're getting. The 6141 is 20/300 or about 320 down.

This amazon thread will explain in more detail: link

Since it's an extra $15 at this point, I would just get the 6141 because maybe you'll get fiber in the next few years and this will be fine.

Oh, and this is just an aside, but if the internet is just for you... you don't need 100 download speed. It is only when you add multiple users all streaming or torrenting a lot of things that you need that bandwith, in my opinion. I live very well by myself at 5/50.
