poster tube post

What's an alternate place to Staples buy a poster tube? I'm thinking of the hard shell plastic kind with a strap for easy carrying, versus the cardboard mailer version...

I need one by Sunday so ordering on line is out. I have a Staples nearby but it seems like they aren't available in store. Where else would you expect to be able to buy one?

Bonus question: I see people flying with these all the time, but how are they getting around the luggage carry-on rules? I'll be flying Delta...

For the future, do a fabric poster. It will change your life.

Best answer: Art supply store. Also if you have Aaron Brothers or similar type of frame shop, they might have it.

If you get desperate you can DIY a strap for a cardboard tube with some duct tape. That's how I used to travel as a grad student. The duct tape I used was hot pink. But what k8t said about fabric posters is definitely the way I'd go now.

You could always just go to the hardware store and get yourself a piece of PVC pipe, a couple of end caps, a couple of eye bolts, and a strap. Screw eye bolts into caps, tie strap to bolts, and voila! Custom made bombproof poster holder that will last you the rest of your life, for about $20.

Yes art store. As for how people are flying with them, most airlines allow you to have a personal item in addition to your carry on bag. What is and what isn't an allowable personal item can be kind of nebulous, but as you say, people fly with poster tubes all the time.

Oh, and if you don't have a handy hacksaw you can get them to cut your PVC pipe to length right in the store. Just ask, they'll definitely do it.

Seconding art supply store. If you have to half-ass it and can't find a cardboard tube, get a sheet of foamcore, and cut, score, and tape it into the right dimensions. I once had to travel with a painting done on paper that could not roll up tightly enough to fit in any affordable premade tubes and the foamcore made a very sturdy and lightweight (important when you're schlepping it up and down the concourse!) traveling "tube".

A college or university book store, if there's one nearby.

They're like $3.50 at Daiso, if you happen to be on the West Coast.
