I have to do a beer mile with a bunch of friends today. Im overwight and outta shape, and of course I didnt prepare for it at all, but i can drink some beer prettty damn good. Anyways, Im not trying to come in first by any stretch of the imagination but I don want to finish and have a good time. Some of my friends are awesome runners (Marathoners). Any tips that will help me not look like a complete jackass and be able to finish. Thanks Everyone!

Play to your strengths; chug the beer, then take it easy around the track. Going to max effort will cause you to puke. Above all, be smooth - the more you shake up that beer in your belly the worse things are going to go for you. Other than this, there's not a ton you can do, and you may be surprised by who does and doesn't do well.

It may a bit late for this at this point, but assuming the event is more than an hour or two away, I would do some solid pre-emptive hydrating. If you drink lots of water to close to the event, then you're just upping the "likely to puke" factor, but if you do it in advance, it should help you. Ideally you would start 12-24 hours beforehand, but even 2-4 hours should be okay. Just don't over do it, if the race is less than four hours away. The sooner the race is, the more conservative I would be with the amount of water you drink. (Total approximation, but advance hydration is a trick I use before airplane flights and standardized tests, among other things.)

Also, think about food. You obviously don't want to eat a heavy meal right before the race, but alcohol and exercise on an empty stomach are never a good combo, especially when you're drinking and running at the same time. I'm thinking that a good idea would be to get a solid meal with plenty of protein around maybe 4 hours or so before the race, and then maybe fuel up with a snack around 30-60 minutes before the race. I think your best bet for this pre-race snack would be something light but that has carbs in it, although some sort of energy bar is probably sufficient. Whatever you do, don't go into this with an empty stomach.

You also want to think about what you'll wear for the race. I know a lot of runners wear tight spandex-y clothes, but at least for your top half, I would go for something loose fitting but breathable. This is especially true if it's going to be hot and sunny out.

Oh, and this may not be at all relevant, but if you're like me and having really bad allergies and congestion right now, I would consider doing some sort of saline sinus rinse before hand. You'll definitely want to be able to breathe freely, and post nasal drip can also induce nausea. Obviously, if you aren't dealing with allergies, then this won't matter.

And most importantly, as mentioned above, pace yourself. Remember, slow and steady wins the race means not passing out or puking.

Good luck!

Remember that you're going for the company and not the contents of the glass.
