My friend received a number of these bugs at her BBQ and she was wondering if anyone could identify them. Location: Berlin, today, during the European heatwave.

Best answer: They look like European chafers, alias june bugs to me.

Best answer: Yep, chafers/june bugs/rose beetles. Harmless to humans, but annoying.

Best answer: We call them Christmas beetles here in Australia :)
Yes, dumb/annoying, because they bump into everyone and everything, but harmless.

Those are actually called Japanese Beetles (Popillia japonica). June bugs are a lot bigger and green all over. :)

Yeah, June bugs. They like to grab on to long hair [/shiver]

I'm struggling to gauge size. On the offchance... if it's about an inch long (2-3cm), I'd take it to be a cockchafer rather than a European chafer.
