I need some new shows to binge or get into :)

Hi there! I am trying to find three new shows to get into. My favorite shows was Grey's Anatomy- although the writing is not so great anymore. I really like Nasheville, Big Bang, Downton Abbey and Modern Family. I just got into Proof and The Good Wife. I have tried Scandal but just can't get into it. OITNB is too depressing for me. Any ideas? Any new shows I should try. thanks!!

Have you tried "Life"? (on Netflix)

My daughter and I really enjoyed "Once Upon A Time." We binged on the first few seasons on Netflix, and we kept up watching when new episodes premiered. I've enjoyed most of what you listed, so it might work for you.

Oh! "Call The Midwife" is also fantastic!

Frasier is on Netflix and god, it is so worth watching. If you like Grey's Anatomy, maybe try Nurse Jackie?

Sadly I haven't found anything to scratch the Downton Abby itch for me, although weirdly, Royal Pains came close. Don't judge it on the pilot, it's very different than the rest of the series. It is also on Netflix.

Response by poster: Call the midwife, ok, I can try again, I couldn't get into it, but good one, I can try again. I also like bones, and chicago fire, suits, royal pains . thanks! i know so silly, but so hard we none of your shows are on.

Response by poster: haha, I do love RP, you are right, the pilot was weird. And, I really go into the VEEP after several episodes. Oh fraiser, good one, and Seinfeld is suppose to be on Hulu now. let me know if anyone likes any of the new show. thanks

A Christmas or two ago I gave my sisters "Veronica Mars" DVDs and they were instant addicts: couldn't stop until they'd gone through the whole three-season run of the show. If you haven't seen it you might give it a try -- you could do far worse. All three seasons are available through Amazon streaming and are free if you have Prime, otherwise you can order DVDs of the first two seasons for under $15 per season.

But.. don't start with the movie. It was an OK bonus for fans of the show but it won't make a whole lot of sense if you haven't seen the series.

Foyles War, Hinterland, Bletchley Circle.

Since you put Big Bang Theory in there, I will suggest a couple of sitcoms you've probably already seen, but maybe not. Parks and Recreation is really funny, and so is New Girl. Both of these were shows I gave up on after the first few episodes because I thought they were dumb, but this time we skipped to about episode 5 or so, and quickly got hooked.

Gossip Girl is probably a good bet for you

What about Gilmore Girls?

How far did you get with Scandal? I found season 1 a bit of a slog but I loved season 2.

I enjoyed Awkward (at least, the first two seasons I've seen)

Cougar Town (don't worry about the name, after season 1 even the show runners are mocking it. It's more a show about a group of friends)

seconding Life, it's awesome.

Also Death in Paradise is fun.

While I'm not totally caught up with it yet, I have really enjoyed House of Lies. It's kind of crazy but entertaining.

I just finished watching Bloodline on Netflix. Loved it. A fascinating family drama set in the Florida Keys. Sissy Spacek was amazing.

Ha! I just posted a TV recommendation request without seeing this! What about The Americans? That might scratch your Homeland itch. You also might like Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries or Sherlock. Seconding (or thirding) Call the Midwife, Veronica Mars, and Life.

PARKS AND RECREATION!
And I think you'd like The 100.

I love Orphan Black, perhaps because it's filmed in my neighbourhood and it makes Toronto look Bad-ass. The actors are great. It's one of those every evolving plots that never leave you satisfied thrillers. IF that's your thing, you'll love it.

I suggest this in every television thread, but: Leverage. Sometimes the descriptions make it sound like a straight-up con/heist kind of show, but it's one of those rare things where somehow the execution makes what could be standard and schlocky absolutely amazing instead. It's just delightful, and surprisingly feel-good-y, and I'm gonna stop because I'll embarrass myself, but seriously, Leverage.

There are some great half hour comedies around:
Brooklyn 99
Parks and Rec
Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt
Community (although I find it a bit patchy in terms of quality, seasons 1-4 are best)
Better Off Ted
Don't Trust the Bitch in Apartment 23 (on the zanier side, but fun)

In terms of one hour dramas, you might like Justifed.

Also if you end up liking Gossip Girl, Bunheads is super good.

Hart of Dixie

Also came here to suggest Hart of Dixie. I bounced off it the first time because I was expecting it to be a medical drama -- it's not. It's a comedy/drama about a character who happens to be a doctor and moves to a very weird but lovable town in Alabama.

If you liked Royal Pains and Bones, you might also like Psych (which rises above its terrible beginning as a "fake psychic" detective show to become a truly terrific show, I really miss it and envy anyone who gets to watch it for the first time) and White Collar.

I also second Brooklyn 99, Parks & Rec, Bunheads, Don't Trust the B, Veronica Mars, and Orphan Black.

I am completely hooked on Suits, which is available on amazon instant. I really love USA television programming. I've been watching Royal Pains on and off for years and it's delightful too.

I just tore through Catastrophe. It's amazing and I am so sad I don't have more new episodes of it to watch.

If you can get the Australian version of "Rake" (on Netflix) give it a try. An excellent show; unfortunately here in Canada Netflix has not aired season 3.

I enjoyed Gilmore Girls, Grace and Frankie, Cheers was dated but fun, loved Friday Night Lights. Loved Being Human - preferred the British version by a lot. I also just watched Inspector Lewis on Amazon and loved it.

Seconding The 100. I just binge-watched it, and it was great. The first season is on Netflix steaming. You can buy the second season from Amazon Instant Video. I can't wait for the third season!

It's not for everyone but I really loved Sense8 on Netflix.

Not quite binge-able, as it's currently airing, but there are 5 eps out so far... unREAL on lifetime. Ignore the fact that it's on lifetime, it's a great combination of pulpy drama and dark moral quandaries, set on the production of a Bachelor style reality show. It's the best thing on tv right now.
posted by bluloo at 8:27 PM on July 1, 2015 [1 favorite]

Did you ever watch Friday Night Lights? It's a bit older now, but the show was fantastic.

Keep watching The Good Wife - it's really good.

Is Breaking Bad too intense for you?

Six Feet Under sounds like it would be depressing, and parts of it are, but I found it full of love, family and emotion.

Reign? It's period drama, but in that WB sort of style. Everyone wears amazing anachronistic outfits.
