What kind of doctor should I see?

I have osteoarthritis in my low back. I've seen a physiatrist who specializes in the spine, and I like him, but he's not very communicative. I would like to see someone else, but I'm not sure who.

I basically want someone who I can talk to about what's going on inside my back and who can give me some strategies to feel better. A really good PT might be helpful, but they're hard to find. Do I want an arthritis specialist? And if so, is that a rheumatologist? And, if anyone has any specific recommendations in the NYC area, please pass them along!

If you have OA you do not need to see a specialist for RA. You can see an orthopedist who specializes in spinal issues, or a sports medicine doctor who does the same. IME the former will focus more on just making you feel better while the latter will focus equally on recovery and helping you regain your desired activity/fitness levels. You can get a PT prescription from either one of them.

If your insurance will cover it, I would suggest calling the Spine Care Institute at HSS and asking them which doctor you should see there for lower back OA. I went to HSS for my hip and it was pretty much the best care & communication I have ever received.
