What on earth is this item of chemistry glassware for?

It looks to me like a barometer of some kind. A google image search for "glass barometer" comes up with some fancy looking versions.

Best answer: I used to use these back when I taught undergrad introductory biology labs. Pretty sure these were used during microbiology labs to grow cultures like yeast. The graduated side catches the gasses that result from fermentation and allow you to quantify quantity of gas against time and therefore get an idea of overall metabolic rate of the culture. An actual microbiologist could tell you more.

Dammit they have a name. . . .
