Where were we buying CDs from in the early 90's?

This post reminded me of a catalog we used to order CDs from back in the early 90's. What was it?

When I was in college (Vassar) in 91-95, people I know passed around a catalog, about the size and shape of a thinnish magazine. It was just lists of artists and CDs you could purchase, for probably about $6-8 each. There were no minimums or contracts or sneaky print - you just bought the CDs you wanted.

Was it the Daedalus Music Catalog? (I loved their book catalog.)

To elaborate: thin magazine-sized, two-color (maybe three?) print on newsprint-ish paper, tended to have stuff that was not quite indy but definitely not top of the charts or best-selling either. I remember them from the mid-90s.

Response by poster: That might've been it.. your memories of the catalog sound the same as mine...

Could've been Forced Exposure, among quite a few others, although they might be a little more indie than you describe.

Quite a few individual labels had catalogs along similar lines as well.

A catalog I remember from the 80s was called Sounds Good.

I came to say Forced Exposure, but it could also have been Flipside.

Other options: Ajax Records Catalog; Sonic Unyon; Record Roundup…

Do you remember if it was primarily focused around one label? Because catalogs from Touch and Go or Matador would have fit about that time too.

Canadian here so not sure if this applies but I used to be a member of Columbia House in the 90s. On a mobile now so can't link.
