Tracking down a 'white label'

Tracking down a 'white label' 12" vinyl...

So there was this track, back in the early nineties in the UK, that a buddy of mine had on a vinyl 12" white label. It was unmarked. It was eh, 'dark house' style techno track that had some samples in it (the only vocals) from what sounded like a movie (although I have no clue what movie) that went along the lines of "I dont wanna hurt you..." and "I wannna smash your brains out, I wanna smash your brains right, the fuck, in" (in an American male accent) Yes, distasteful, but they suited the music , and their apparent ripping from a movie always made me think that one day I'd be watching Jack Nicolson spew them with his head through a axe shattered door (er, I no I dont think they are from the Shining, but they are sort the lines that could be)

So, I want the track. I only just barely know the 'tune', exccept I know I used to love it especially when I was er, off my head. (lets face it techno is not about a melody) Given that I've lost touch with the friend who owned the original 'white label' has anyone got any ideas where the sample might be from? If I could just track down the sample it might be a start to finding the actual tune...

The only other info I have is that it was probably circa 1994, the white label was purchased somewhere between Portsmouth and Bournmouth (in the South of England) and we (my buddy and I) knew it as "the snowball EP" but that might have been some ecstacy fueled reference to the fact that it was , er a white label - I dont know... It was potentially some local artist just walking into a record store and dumping his unmarked tunes into the bin, it could have been a demo sent to a radio station and flogged by some unscrupulous employee - it could have been anything. White sleeve, white sticker, no marks of any kind on the platter itself that I recall... But a kicking tune!

So - anyone know where its from? Or even better what the white label was? Or more importantly how I might go about tracking it down?

Best answer: Well, the sample *is* from The Shining:

Jack Torrance: Wendy.
Wendy Torrance: Stay away.
Jack Torrance: Darling. Light, of my life. I'm not gonna hurt ya. You didn't let me finish my sentence. I said, I'm not gonna hurt ya. I'm just gonna bash your brains in. I'm gonna bash 'em right the fuck in. Ha, ha.

I don't know how accurate this is, or even if it's useful, but this page seems to have a list of songs that may have sampled The Shining. Might be able to find it there.

I remember back in the day there used to be an industrial sample list floating around on Usenet. Ahh, there we go.

The Top Sample Sources

Hopefully that helps.

Best answer: BadSeamus, I don’t know anything about this genre, but some quick Googling on the terms “shining” “jack nicholson” “remix” and “sample” with some permutations, convinced me Ed Rush and Optical were your likely suspects. If you search for “shining” on this drum-and-bass site you’ll find several MP3 mixes that include the track “Shining.” I’m pulling down a 109-minute MP3 now to see if I hear what you remember hearing.

Response by poster: Whoooooooa! - well now I feel stupid :)

I guess "The Shining" cross reference must have existed in my brain as I wrote the question. I honestly have seen the movie umpteen times, and never had a 'Eureeka!' moment... Wow.

...Searching the link you gave as we speak...

So far, I don't hear what you remember, but I don't have the patience to listen to this very speedy tacketa-tacketa business much longer. How are you doing?

Response by poster: Man, I love this site. Thanks! Seriously! I have four potential candidates on their way as we speak...

If no one else can help, and if you can find them, maybe you can hire ilm.

Yes. Torture your ears no longer (I did say it wasn't about the melody right?) Thanks for the pointers, I'll report back when/ if I have a solution - its enough for now to know that the sample was from The Shining... that will keep me in 'fresh leads' for days no doubt...
