How to get a car and keep going?

My son, his wife and young son are stuck near the Salt Lake City airport. They planned to fly into SLC from CA, rent a car and explore Wyoming. They are considering moving to the area. At the rental agency my son discovered that his drivers license was expired. They had moved recently and he never received the renewal notice. He renewed his license online and printed the receipt but the rental company would still not rent to him. Plus they would not refund his prepayment.

I told him to try another car rental place. He's trying to figure out how to get a car so they can continue their trip. Any ideas? Thanks!

Maybe a peer-2-peer car rental like RelayRides? Buy a cheap used car and sell it after the trip? Buy a new car with 0% down and 0% interest deal, and drive it back to CA and keep it?

This happened to me in Palm Springs, and I was allowed to rent a car with the printed out renewal notice. The difference is probably that I went through a family-owned company rather than a big one. Try calling around - someone may take pity on them.

Response by poster: Forgot to mention that his wife doesn't drive. His son doesn't either but he'd like to! Thanks for the answers so far!

According to the DMV the receipt confirmation for renewal is not valid as a driver's license.

Your son will either need to return to California at a DMV to get a temporary license permit from a DMV office, but driving legally is out of the question here. Even if he gets someone to rent a car to him, if he's stopped he may be cited for driving without a valid driver's license.

Either go back to California or go sight seeing at SLC with a hired driver/taxi cab.

Enterprise is really nice in SLC. They have a weekend special rate out of the fourth south and third west office, if they aren't the company who turned them down. Act like nothing is wrong and hand them the license and renewal at the same time.
