Walking in downtown Indianapolis

I am coming to Indianapolis in June for Amerivespa. I've been trying to keep my activity levels up lately and increasing my daily steps by using a pedometer app, but riding my scooter all day is liable to put a huge dent in my totals. So I'm looking for some walking routes/advice for downtown Indianapolis.

I'll be staying at the Comfort Suites City Centre on West St, and will be there Weds through Sunday. I would probably want to walk early in the morning, early evening, or even after dark. Looking for about a two mile total distance. Is that area safe for walking? I am city folk and reasonably aware of my surroundings in my own neighborhood.

And can you suggest some routes or destinations? Since I'll be heading out with my scooter gang fairly early, walking to a good breakfast spot would probably work well. I don't mind doing laps or doubling back on the same route, if that's what's needed. Anything interesting to see?

Best answer: I'd suggest the Cultural Trail.

Best answer: Canal Walk
White River State Park (which has some outdoor art installations)

Best answer: What DevilsAdvocate said.

You can also walk from your hotel to the circle, up to Mass Ave. The part of town you're staying in is pretty walk friendly.

Best answer: The Indianapolis City Market has a lot to offer. The Tomlinson Tap Room on its upper level is "the only bar in Indiana that solely offers Indiana craft beer." On the main floor, Fermenti Artisan is a must-try for all manner of fermented foods and beverages. Should be just over a mile from your hotel.
