Crochet Emergency - Travel Edition

Crocheters, I'm on vacation and really, truly want to get this yarn as my souvenir. I can't remember my Ravelry password, and the site isn't sending me a reset email. Will you please suggest some google-able patterns so I can make sure I get enough? It seems to be light worsted, with a 4mm hook. My skill level is intermediate. Děkuji!

Best answer: I have worked with that yarn! It is beautiful and has a varying thickness from what I'd call a light to normal worsted. I like some of the patterns from yarnspirations. Here's the free + crochet + medium weight ones. Maybe this hat and scarf, or this purse? When a yarn is so pretty that I just gotta have it and I don't have a pattern for it, I usually get two skeins and make a cowl out of it.

Best answer: The top patterns are all hosted on Ravelry, but if you're just concerned about getting enough, it looks like one skein is enough for a crochet hat, two skeins for a cowl, and three for a small shawl. Those are the top projects in Ravelry for that yarn and craft=crochet.

Can you narrow down the type of project you'd be interested in making with it? Small accessories, larger neck/shoulder wraps, or bigger items like sweaters?

Best answer: Here's a chart with yardage estimates for different kinds of projects.

Best answer: For the record, I've seen that yarn available at many US yarn stores. I mention this not to dissuade you from buying it (I buy souvenir yarn whenever I can, and it doesn't matter if it's something I can't find at home as long as I love it) but because it won't be too hard to buy more if you find a pattern you love later. Malabrigo yarns tend to vary widely between dye lots, though, so either stock up if there's a color you love, or look for a pattern where you can use multiple colors.

That said, this hat requires only one skein of Rios, and looks straightforward and will show off the colors well. If you want something more elaborate, this shawl uses four skeins.

Response by poster: Thanks all! I am now the proud owner of a cool 4mm hook and two skeins that look like they'll make a beautiful cowl.

The Edie Cowl is my default project for using up smaller amounts of gorgeous yarn or if I need a gift for someone in a day or so. I usually add a row or two more of fans on either side of the piece (you start with a chain, doing big fans in the round, then flip your work and do the same thing upside-down into the base of the starting chain, so it's mirrored.) I've made five or six of them at least. Just make sure after that first row of fans you can comfortably get it past your head to check gauge, and if it's too tight you can increase the starting chain to fit more fans. A couple of these I've made use different colors for the top and bottom half with lots of extra rows, and then they can be folded/tucked around to look like very different cowls.
