Starting a food-related business on the cheap?
May 5, 2015 9:10 AM

Asking for a friend: I want to start an LLC in NYC and sell yummy sweet things. Most of the requirements are pretty straightforward, but the newspaper publication requirement runs over a thousand dollars! Is there any way to get around having to pay such crazy high Certificate of Publication fees? (I am in Queens, if it makes a difference.) Thanks!!

Use a registered agent in Albany and publish in Albany County newspapers (about $200 instead of $1500). The registered agent has an annual fee, but after publication, you can change the address to your primary business address and stop using the agent.

Also, whether publication is actually necessary is debatable, but you'd want an attorney to review your particular circumstances before going down that road.

What melissasaurus said, although Queens publications usually run closer to $500-$600 (a little more if you use a service company).

Sorry, $600-700, rather. But definitely not into the thousands unless you're getting some other services on top of the publication.

Ah, yes, the $1500 I quoted is for NY County.
