LOST Screen Cap

LOSTfilter: I found a great link last week but (argh) didn't bookmark it. It's several animated gifs/screen caps from the show LOST on ABC. All of the pics show weird flying black things. One set on the beach, and one from the jungle that actually flys up and stops in front of the camera. Am I crazy, or has anyone else seen these?
I'd suspect these .gifs are photoshopped, if you didn't think that already.
I've ready plenty of the forums at Televisionwithoutpity.com about Lost, and I find it hard to believe something as obvious as black objects swooping through the air go unnoticed by thousands of people. Ergo, I presume these .gifs are just some fans attempt to either a) play with the show, or b) dupe people, much like that genetic lost link posted to MeFi a few weeks ago, suggesting the "numbers" all relate to some theory of DNA.

Uh, sorry, NO. It's in the episodes. Those aren't photoshopped. This has been discussed at length on just about any LOST forum of value.

Those ones from blackstarentertainment.com aren't all that mysterious, because they mainly show portions of last season's finale in which aspects of the mysterious "monster" were intentionally shown.
The bits from the pilot with the engine blowing up are the ones over which people actually fight with each other, the basics of it being "it's more of the monster!" versus "it's a special effects placeholder they forgot to remove".

Maybe you're talking about the gifs posted in this guy's blog.
I searched google for pages containing the url of the gif posted by TheOnlyCoolTim.
(I haven't seen this episode yet, so this is all news to me)

One of those black blobs looks a little like the Flying Spaghetti Monster...

from the crappy sound effects*, I always assumed the 'monster' was some sort of big-ass retro steampunk robot, with a light-shifting device on it. the black stuff is smoke leaking out.
the plane engine blowing up? yeah, that sorta happens when planes crash and large fscked-up engines full of fuel are sitting around still running. don't think it matters whether the black things did it or not.
* vrooooooo! clank! chains! steam-soundy-thing!

Except even Locke, when season two started, referred to the rope made of smoke which tried to pull him into the ground. The smoke IS the monster.

The smoke IS the monster
not sure I buy that... 'the smoke' "tried to pull him into the ground" because 'the smoke' is all he could actually see doing it.
but if that was the case, why would it be making strange distinctly mechanical sounds? or any sounds for that matter? I can think of many other sounds that would be much more intentionally terror-inspiring (on the part of the monster-makers) than chains and steam. old and out of repair, leaking fluids and gases.
I still think the smoke is leaking out of whatever it is, out of its appendages (e.g. 'rope') etc. I mean, it's probably powered by the geo-thermal reactor dealie, so: smoke and steam.
then again, if the reactor is powering some big electromagnetic thingy (which we know it is!), then yeah maybe the 'smoke' is some hydromagnetic manifestation that goes around smashing stuff up. I can buy that.
but this is why it's so fun: we'll find out!

Looking at the cuts from the same angle as the GIF TheOnlyCoolTim posted (which is from Season 1, Episode 1, around 15:42 in), there are several other black floating items, both before and after the engine explosion. I believe they are ash and debris from the crash.
The one from the GIF looks like a square piece of light, black debris being blown around in the foreground near the actors, rather than something swooping in from the sea to brush the engine before it explodes.

The way I saw it, a guy got sucked into the engine causing it to explode. No need for mysterious black flying smokey things in that scene. As for the rest of it, you're on your own as the show didn't hold my interest.
