Starship Troopers 2: Summer Vacation edition

Is a late June family vacation to Ephraim, WI and Door County bound to resemble a family of four battling black flies and other various and sundry killer insects? If so, how to cope?

We had planned to rent a historic cottage in Eprhaim, WI for a quiet and restful vacation within driving distance of the Twin Cities. Many colleagues and friends recommended Door County for sandy beaches and easier walking / navigating with young children, who might otherwise be prone to falling off hillsides "Up North" in Minnesota. Also, as a Californian, I have no interest in rocky beaches.

Also as a Californian, I am unaccustomed to excessive bug interaction. In recounting our summer plans to a native Minnesotan who guffawed and advised us to invest in toddler-sized head nets to keep the black flies at bay, I'm now seriously reconsidering our plans.

Is this vacation doomed?

(NB: I fully understand that encounters with the natural world include insect life. My point in asking is whether or not the timing and location will make time out of doors with a 3 and 5 year old exceedingly unpleasant)

Best answer: Not at all! The breeze wafting across the peninsula keep most insects at bay. Source: I live in Door County.

Best answer: Nope, it's going to be stupid beautiful and you are going to have a great time. I hate bugs and spend lots of time in Door County in the summer. Like, you might get one mosquito bite at night, but it's no bigs.

If you're there for Fyr Bal don't miss it. Lots of fun stuff for the kiddos, and the bonfires are so pretty.
