Downloading streaming audio

How can I down load music, specifically streaming audio, from the Internet? Are there are programs that can capture the audio and save it directly to your computer in a common format, that is, anything that I can later burn into a CD?

StreamRipperX is my recommendation for the Mac. There are tons of rippers for Windows, many that integrate nicely into Winamp.

I suppose I should go ahead and link the Win32 builds of StreamRipper (Just remembered they exist, sorry). Good integration with Winamp so ripping Shoutcast streams is very efficient.

I've used AudioHijack on the Mac, and been happy with the results.

If you're feeling geeky, mplayer (for any platform imaginable) can do amazing things with just about any stream you throw at it. (I've got it set up, with a Python script, to record the internet streams of some of my favourite radio shows automatically.)

This is a groundhog day question.

I've been using Nettransport quite successfully as part of a chain of tools to convert This American Life's streamed real audio to something my mp3 player can handle. They say something about a 90 day trial, but I haven't seen anything of it.

A similar question was asked on May 16, 2005, regarding an easier and more efficient way of rcording Real Audio and other streaming audio sources

Total Recorder is what I use as well.

The automatic scheduling function is invaluable.
