Balm, Gloss, Oil, or Wax

What beard styling products, tips, and tricks should I know about?
I recently noticed my mustache is long enough to wax into handlebars. I had some Murray's Pomade on hand and it worked okay. But is there a better product?
More to the point, if I'm waxing my mustache I feel I should do something with my goatee. The questions being: what and how?
Here's my un-styled self.

Im a fan of
-The Bearded Bastard, particularly Opium Den, Morocco, and vanilla. His waxes are a firm hold, his scents delicious.
-Beard Brand Four Vices; essen ce of coffee, hops, tobacco, & cannabis. The wax is a medium hold.the tubes are convenient.
-The Art of Shaving carries Golddachs of Hungary wax. Medium hold, light vanilla scent.
If you want to discipline it w out going full-topiary, something like the Golddachs, just a bit. The Bastard's waxes are for full-topiary.
Definitely oil it to keep it healthy & strong. Just a dab worked through. A wooden beard comb is useful and cool.

And here's how I roll.

I'd like to recommend Sleigh Master Beard Balm - it's a favorite in our house. It's really just for conditioning, not styling. And you smell super pepperminty, without the weird oil smell you can sometimes have.

It is also spectacularly easy to make your own moustache wax - combine an equal volume of beeswax and unscented petroleum jelly, heat in a steel pot enough to melt and combine the two, then pour into a low wide jar or tin to cool and harden. This is a good baseline wax that starts off fairly firm but will work through a moustache when warmed from handling, then retain stiffness. Adjust the proportions of wax to petroleum in further batches to find a blend that has the appropriate smoothness and hold for your respective moustache and/or climate. Cheap, works great and your lip will smell faintly delicious!

In addition to the make-your-own wax, you can also make your own oil. It's generally cheaper than what you can buy, and you can customize it. There are lots of suggestions online for which oils to use (here's a good overview). I've only mixed up one batch (that's lasted me a month at least), but I used jojoba oil as the bulk of it, and then three or four essential oils like tea tree, pine, and cedar.
It won't give you as much hold as the wax, but it's a step up from nothing, and you can create something that feels great, smells great and makes you look less unkempt all at the same time.
