Please help find: SF story involving the Fates, laser, difficult terrain

I told a friend about a SF story I'd read, but I can't find the title and author. the plot: a person working for a satellite company is mapping Greece, and comes up with the idea of following the most difficult route at any given point.

This leads him to an area that is very difficult to access--and is the home of the Fates, from Greek mythology. He is threatened by them--his life's cord will be cut. He tries to cut the cord of the fates, but it is too strong; he manages to sever it with a laser from the satellite.
Can anyone identify the story? Thanks.

Is it The Loom of Thessaly by David Brin?
