Help me find this movie about an Asian science student studying at uni

I just remembered a movie that I saw part of on TV years ago. Here's all I remember about it. It was about a young man who was studying science at a university, I think he was a grad student. I think he was a genius or coming up with some cutting edge theory or discovery. It was definitely science, I'm pretty sure astronomy... He was Asian and I'm pretty sure had just come to America for college/grad school. He frequented a tea shop where he first ordered "togo" tea, not realizing it was "to go."

At one point he asks out the barista who turns him down. He's socially akward/shy/maybe doesn't speak enough English to make friends where he lives. Lots of depression ... Also about the time I dropped out from watching the movie a professor's wife was trying to look out for him.

That's all I've got. Does anyone know what movie this was? I can't seem to pull together the right keywords to find it on Google...

Oh, and I'm pretty sure it was a 90s movie.

Response by poster: That's it. Wow, I just read the description on wikipedia, apparently I didn't watch enough to see the main plot point.
