How to sell a domain anonymously?

I have owned the .com of a domain for about 10 years. Hadn't done anything with it although I had planned to. Competitor appears to have bought the .net of the same name about 2 years ago, put up a website, and is probably selling his service from it (our occupation is exactly the same)...

I have no need to get into a legal kerfuffle with this guy; he has successfully scooped me, but I'd like to anonymously sell him the domain if he's interested. How might I go about this? I periodically have to work with this guy in the setting/context of national workshops and committees so I don't want to play hardball with him, as a known entity, if I don't have to.

FWIW, the domain has been privately registered since day 1 .

If you have someone willing to speak on you behalf, create a trust, and have that person be the trustee.

You can easily contact the guy yourself using an alternate email address and conduct all the negotiations through this address. Once you agree on a price, you can use an escrow service so the whole transaction chain will remain anonymous. Using escrow to buy/sell domains is extremely common so you will find a lot of providers, for example Escrow.com does this. If you are currently registered with one of the bigger registrars, there is a good chance they provide an escrow service as well.

Sell the domain to a broker with the specific constraint that they never mention the previous owner.

If you own the domain you can make an email address of admin@example.com and email him and say, Would you like to buy this domain?

At that point pick an escrow service like mentioned above.

Are your WHOIS details anonymous? Were they always anonymous? Because if not...

Stated as such in the last line of his question.
