Shocking Revelation from Fellow Teacher. Is this unusual?

My colleague and I teach at a small college. This afternoon he told me that he (37) has been having an affair with a female student (20) we both know from our respective courses. They have just had a baby and the three are now living at my colleague's house.
The student had been doing pretty well in the courses I teach. One day, a few months ago, she stopped coming to school. Today my colleague told me that the reason behind the student's quitting was her pregnancy.
My colleague said he had intended to speak with the school authorities to tell them about the situation for long, but had never gotten down to it. He wants to request that another teacher be appointed to assess this student when she returns to class.
I have been a teacher for 10 years, and I am rather shocked by the news. Have you heard of similar situations (especially the part involving a new family created in this manner)?
