Spaghetti carbonara (v typical Roman dish) one night. Watch Borgia (the Canal+ version, not the horrible Showtime version) another. Watch Gladiator another night. Then an episode of Rome. Last night of the week watch Roman Holiday.

You might consider signing off in your emails or texts with an Italian phrase. Unless you're already in Italy, and then that isn't going to help.

Best answer: Could give her three coins, to reference the Trevi Fountain.

Yes to three coins, yes to Italian phrase, yes to the movies.

You could also give her a copy of Ovid's Amores, and if you wanted to even fake her out, you could pass it off like that's your gift (it's a book of Ovid's love poetry).

Get Gelato.

Rent a Vespa?

Give her a copy of Edith Wharton's short story "Roman Fever" - (or play it in the car)

Respighi: Pines of Rome. I love this clip (5 min) but it is a New Year's concert in Japan so it might be a little confusing. Or good for the first hint if you don't want it to be too easy.

Response by poster: Thanks everyone for the responses.

In the end went with a 3 part clue.

Sent her 3 images
1. Picture of 3 coins (3 coins in the Trevi fountain)
2. Picture of David Thewliss (plays Remus Lupin in Harry Potter. Remus being one of the founders of Rome)
3. Picture of Michael Caine - (The Italian Job)
