Looking to identify an anime show or movie I saw the end of

While I was living in Japan I used to catch bits of shows late at night after getting home. One I saw about 15 minutes of was really intriguing and I haven't been able to identify it.

This was around 2005. The end credits and the end of the show or movie involved a great big mechanical tower that appeared to be done in some hybrid of cgi and hand-drawn animation, and there was a very intense drummy soundtrack.

Does this sound familiar to anyone? I know we have a good number of people here familiar with anime

You didn't catch a TV airing of Howl's Moving Castle, did you? The "drummy soundtrack" doesn't quite jive with my memory of Hisaishi's score, but that's the most probable candidate for a TV airing in 2005 that I can think of.

Hmmmh. :P The trouble is that series will often have a few different sets of end-credits throughout their run.. and unless watching live, people tend to skip them! Can you remember anything else about the show, even some little details?

In the meantime, this might help: 2005 anime
Also if you google "2005 anime" it gives a bar showing the covers for the anime from then that people talk about the most. You might notice something you recognise!

It's a profoundly uncreative suggestion that demonstrates my lack of knowledge of recent anime, but when you said 'intense drummy soundtrack' my mind instantly snapped to Geinoh Yamashirogumi's score for Akira (to be fair, it is a truly fantastic score), which did have a very percussion-y piece over the end credits.

Makes me think of Steamboy. I can't find any decent clips online but if you google image search "steamboy tower" it might jog your memory.

Response by poster: Nah, it wasn't Akira or Howl's Moving Castle or Steamboy unfortunately. Though Steamboy is one I haven't seen and looks kinda cool, gonna check that out.

The tower was more brightly colored. I'd almost want to say there were reds and golds.

This has a release date somewhat after what you were looking for, but was it tekkon kinkreet?

Response by poster: That Count of Monte Cristo video looks a bit closer--I am going to have to check it out and see if that's not it.

Tekkon Kinkreet I actually own the DVD of, man that movie is beautiful and if anyone reading this hasn't seen it do yourself a favor.
