Actress on NPR who did multiple accents/ one woman story

During around 2002 or 2003, I heard an interview on NPR, and the woman embodied several women in one. I kinda also think a woman did this around her work in Katrina as well, she interviews multiple people and then acts out what they say in a play. What I am talking about is a women who invoked women of different backgrounds and nationalities, I think this took place, or the characters rather were based in New York city. It was very fascinating. It could have been on fresh air, not sure.

Anne Deavere Smith. Well-known for her powerful piece, "Twilight: Los Angeles."

From your description, I think that you are referring to the play Bridge and Tunnel. The actor and playwright has been on NPR several times, and did discuss this particular play on NPR. Sarah Jones has had other subsequent plays, but I will let you use google since I'm not sure which subsequent play/plays you are looking for.

It's probably not Miranda July performing parts of "It Chooses You" on Selected Shorts, in which she reenacts interviews she did with people about the for-sale ads they placed in the PennySaver, but you might enjoy that anyway.
