What to do in Rotterdam?

I am holed up for 5 days in Rotterdam at the film festival but want to break away from it and explore. Looking for suggestions.

I like galleries/museums. I like architecture. I like wandering. And some of the suggestions in the previous askme thread on Rotterdam will be helpful. Looking for decent places to check out music (experimental/drone/free jazz/damaged rock). Where can i get a decent cup of coffee? I've never eaten Surinamese food before and am excited about the noodles and tempeh but a bit confused with all the options. Food recommendations would be appreciated. Just looking for a road map to anything skewed/strange/beautiful...... something to shine a little light into my fogged out/jet-lagged head.

Museum Boijmans van Beuningen is large, and there are several other art galleries / museums close by.

Around metro / train station Blaak you have the cube houses as well as a small historic harbour, and I think there are several restaurants in the area though I don't know anything about their quality. Near Blaak there's also the Markthal, a large food market that also has restaurants.

I've one day crossed the Erasmus Bridge to look at the modern architecture at the other end.

If you've got a couple of hours to kill you might take boat trip throug the harbour or on the river. I once took one of the public transit waterbus boats to the nearby historic town of Dordrecht, which was excellent. The public transic ones to the more industrial areas around Rotterdam are also great, and there are also more tourist-oriented ones that take you through the harbour.

Het Park is great for walking. And it's next to the Euromast, which is charming in a very 1960s way and offers nice views over the river (if it's not too foggy). If you're interested in a fancy meal, I can recommend seafood restaurant ZeeZout. I haven't been to the Markthal food market yet, but it's supposed to be impressive. Here is some info on where to get coffee.

If you like Bond movies, you might want to visit the Kunsthal's Designing 007 exhibition, which ends on February 8.

Gouda is only 18 minutes away on the Intercity train, and it has a lovely city center.

Best answer: Seconding almost all recommendations above.

Good Chinese/Surinam food: Kiem Foei on the West-Kruiskade. Which is a nice street to wander anyway, better than the modernist shambles near Blaak IMO. Another street with nice cafe's in that neighbourhood is Nieuwe Binnenweg. The grand café Westerpavilioen there is well recommended and on the way to the musea mentioned above.

Best nightlife pubs are on Witte de Withstraat. For leftfield stuff visit Worm overthere, you might also catch a weird band gigging there. The adjacent Wünderbar is awesome.

My favourite little restaurant is a Vietnamese called Deli Tasty on de Meent.

All this is close to the filmfestival venues, there's a couple of other good Indian and Surinam places I could recommend but they're a bit shabby and out of the way.

Enjoy the festival and the town! I'll be catching some films myself, feel free to memail me if you want to hang out.
