I'm trying to identify a French movie for a colleague.
I don't have much to go on and IMDB/Google have failed me.

Probably ca. 1960-1975.
Possibly black and white.
A young couple are in love. He is - or becomes - educated and sophisticated. She isn't/doesn't. He dumps her. She is heartbroken.
In the final scene she is in some sort of hospital, possibly after a suicide attempt, claiming to be fine. She says that she is OK and that she is going to Crete -or some other Greek island. He leaves. She enters a small room/closet with a poster of the island. Suicide is implied.
The end.
