Song-filter: 90s-00s high pitched male, break and minimalist ending

What is the song in my head?

Details I remember: No earlier than 90s, could be 2000s. Alt or rock/pop. It got radio air time, probably on a top 40 or other mainstream station. It was probably from an already established band. The only part that I remember is toward the end there is a pause and then one thin sounding piano (could be a really plinky guitar) comes in and one very high pitched, male vocalist sings a verse along the lines of "and then it's there for a minute" (or "then you're gone in a moment" or... I just don't know). The ending is pretty melancholy sounding, with very minimalist instruments and vocals. Please help, it's killing me.

Response by poster: Thank you so much, my boyfriend has been playing "is it this?" with me for literally the past 45 minutes and Ask Me got it in 9. It was Five for Fighting.
