Fixed Layout epub to amazon kindle format

I have a fixed layout book in Indesign that I want to publish as an ebook on amazon. I need to export it as a fixed layout epbub and then amazon converts it to their format. It looks fine in indesign and when I export and view on my ipad as an epub, it looks fine, but something in the conversion to kindle format is screwing everything up.

I've read the guidelines for kindle and a lot of other stuff online but I just can't figure this out.

The main problem is that the text is all jumbled, like the kerning is super out of wack. Sometimes there's lots of space between words, sometimes no space at all. Example.

It's a photography and novella ebook so it has to be fixed layout.

I've seriously spent dozens of hours trying to figure this out and would really appreciate any help or advice from people with experience with fixed layout epubs and amazon, on this specific problem or general export advice.

Have you tried taking your ePub file and letting Calibre convert it to .mobi before trying it on a kindle?

Did you try the kindle plugin? Converting from one format to another is not well defined and not encouraged by the respective format owners, a quixotic process that will make you crazy.

Response by poster: The kindle plugin doesn't seem to work with fixed layout.

I've been exporting in fixed layout epub and converting and previewing with the Kindle Previewer. I tried to download Calibre but I get a "disk images can't be opened" error.

It's definitely driving me crazy.

Here's an informative answer on stackexchange about converting to kf8, maybe it contains a few tips?
