What are the best online resources for finding local companies in selected industries in the UK?

Scoot is pretty good and can order the results by distance.

Unless of course you're looking for something a bit more specific, but I can't help you unless you give some more details.

I would usually use yell, which is just yellow pages online. Specific industries will often have their own directories, but there's no point us all just slinging those in as there are a lot of industries out there.

Response by poster: Sorry. I meant a more industry level search. Not just service industry companies listed in Yellow Pages. (Not that those two links are not going to be useful).

I am looking for information to help with a job search (software engineer). I would like skip the job blocking recruiters that clog up all the job sites and directly target companies that I would be interested in.

Normally, I would go through a chamber of commerce but here (Birmingham) that info is behind a pay wall.

I'd go to Jobserve, search for all IT jobs in the brum area and contact them directly - even if the advertised job isn't directly relevant to you. This way, you at least know which companies are currently actively recruiting.

I stuck my cv up on monster.co.uk and got my last 2 jobs that way.

Response by poster: Both those last 2 links are to the jobsites I am already on and they are just recruiters posting. I have yet to see an actual company listing a job. My resume is pretty eclectic and I am looking for a career change so I almost never fit their specific experience requirements but I am sure I would be a good fit for many companies if I can cut out the know nothing middlemen by contancting them directly.

Best answer: I got to matchtech by going through fish4.com, they seem to be a specialist IT recruiter and there appear to be jobs around Brum. Can we assume you already check out the Guardian jobs pages on a regular basis? New Scientist carries some jobs that might be appropriate.
You could also try Job Centre online, general for jobs but searchable for specifics.

OK then. Can't really help on the industry lists but this AskMe has some good advice about finding 'unadvertised' jobs and also why recruitment consultants are sometimes a necessary evil.
