I have a song in my head from childhood. Does anybody know which audio-visual iteration of Beatrix Potter it comes from, and if it's possible to get hold of nowadays? Here 'tis. "How's the country? I confess I've never seen it, though I'm sure it must be absolutely fine. And I'm told you go to bed at half-past nine? You say you do?" "Oh aye." "Perhaps that's all there is to do, but how's the country?" cont.

"It is said to be delightful, and especially the blossom in the Spring. That's assuming you enjoy that sort of thing - you say you do?"
"Oh aye."
"Bully lad for you! For my part, I prefer the town.
"People may not be so worthy but they're not so beastly earthy, as for my part, every time the town. Country lore.....can be such a bore! But how's the country?
"Now you mustn't be offended, you must take me with a tiny pinch of salt. I mean
(Charles Gray drawl) Dash it all, old chap(end drawl) it's not your fault! You have to be born somewhere: I'm only very sorry it was there.

Best answer: It's from the David Croft/Cyril Ornadel songs which accompany Vivien Leigh's narration. You can hear the track on David Croft's site here - the song's about two-fifths in.

Response by poster: O. My. God. You are completely wonderful. Thank you.

Vivian Leigh, eh? Well that's something. Every word and note of three of the stories is engraved in my mind but I had no idea who made them. Thanks again.
