GoodEatsFilter - I am travelling to the Windy City from NY state in two days via rustmobile and I am looking for some good eats along the way.....[more]

There was this PBS documentary about great sandwiches around the county and this is sort of what is driving this. However, for those of you in PA, OH, and IA do you have any suggestions that would be reasonably in line with the route laid out below? Me be hungry.

The people I went to college with swore by Quaker Steak and Lube. It's right on the PA/OH border and they would drive from Cleveland just to eat there. In Cleveland I would recommend a stop at Tommy's in Coventry. Excellent milkshakes and a wide variety of "different" sandwiches.

Now I'm hungry, thanks a lot.

Hi lampshade, do you want any recommendations for the Chicago area, or just recommendations en route to Chicago? I'm a local, and I've even lived in Naperville. The people at LTH Forum really know their stuff, and you should check it out. search for old posts or make a post yourself. Have a good trip!

For some reason or another, the Cracker Barrel on highway 80 on the OH/PA border always hits us as the most appetizing thing around. It's probably because we've just driven through PA, which I'm sure is a nice place to live, but on highway 80 it's like an unending abyss of hills and valleys that will leave you yearning for some good midwest flat-state.

You mean IN, not IA, methinks. If you ever do go to IA, you should try Maid-Rites. YUM.

Stop at Wawa in PA. I know it's a convenience store, but c'mon, you can make your own sandwich on a touchscreen, and add extra bacon and extra cheese and all manner of random condiments and other food accessories. For a convenience store, I find their sandwiches rather tasty.

The roadfood forums are The Bible for car trips and anytime you find yourself in unfamiliar American territory.

I would recommend 'Anatolia Café' on Cedar Rd in Cleveland. It is by far the best Turkish food in the area and is well worth the stop. They have tons of vegetarian options, if that is a concern, as well. They are open until 10PM M-F. I also second the Tommy's in Coventry recommendation. Both are within 30min of I-90.

Anatolia Cafe is 10min off of I-271 and only requires one turn--right off of the highway onto Cedar Rd. After leaving the restaurant, you just go right back the way you came onto I-271.
