I need a high end sophisticated asian dining experiance in Central London / zone 1.
yes,
asian = south asian
or asian = east asia
or asian = south east asia?
(I am aware this can be broken down further, but in terms of general groupings, this works. Experience: Asian living in London and eats out 3 times a week at restaurants)

Response by poster: Lets go SE Asian.
or if you have some stellar recommendantions of the the rest of the genre tell me.
I have not lived in UK for 40 years, only occasional visits.
My son is getting married and I wish to have a memorable dinner with him.

Best answer: I've not eaten there, but I imagine the setting alone will make Hutong at The Shard a memorable dining experience.

Matsuri in St. James' does great teppanyaki. I had live, half of lobster there. I thought only one of those lobster descriptions could be true, then the thing started moving on the griddle. Delicious.

Do you need a lot of tables (getting married implies lots of guests) or is this a personal dinner?

Best answer: South East Asian is hard for fine dining, as there are not many places I can think of .... None seem to come to mind right now.
East Asian
Hakkasan (Cantonese, the Mayfair one is better)
HKK (Cantonese, owned by Hakkasan as well, has a 15 course tasting menu with accompanying mocktails or wine, highly recommend)
Roka (Japanese)
Kai Mayfair (Cantonese/ Chinese)
South Asian
Trishna (has a 8 course menu)
Gymkhana
In terms of wow factor:
Sushi Samba (Japanese, on the 80th something floor of the Heron Tower)
Hutong (Northern chinese, on the 30th floor of the Shard )
My recommendations would be HKK if you value the food more, either Sushisamba or Hutong if you want a restaurant with beautiful views overlooking London from a very high viewpoint. Price per person is about £60 - £100, not including wine.

I guess it depends on what you mean by high-end. For the "super" high-end Chinese I'd recommend China Tang at the Dorchester, which has a great Peking Duck. For Japanese, I'd second Matsuri which is great for the theatrical teppanyaki and quality of food. I'd have to disagree with Hakkasan, which I thought was overhyped and not good value in terms of the food. Kai was another which I thought wasn't great value and the food was nothing special. Roka is fine, but more fusion that authentic, if you like that kind of food.

Best answer: Sushi Samba is surprisingly good and it's a really spectacular setting. The bars are lovely too. There's a roped off but which is also nice, they'll usually let you in here if you tell them it's a special occasion in advance. Clientele is a bit American Psycho but nevertheless I would probably recommend it for a memorable evening. Avoid Friday nights if possible though.
I agree that Hakkasan is very overpriced for what it is - drinks and nibbles only for me there from now on.
I have had wonderful food and service at The Cinnamon Club if you wanted to go Indian.
