He who controls the spice rack, controls the dinner table!

I need a wall-mounted spice rack that comes with refillable bottles and holds more than twelve bottles at a time. For some reason, the prices skyrocket 50+% above 12 bottles. Anyone have any good spice racks that fit those requirements or some search terms I can use? This is proving to be more difficult than I thought.

What is your price range though?

also i really like these but they're pretty expensive

Why not do rack and bottles separately? I imagine the Container Store would have refillable bottles, and then once you've found the ones you like, you can measure them and find a rack to fit.

Response by poster: I was really hoping to spend under $50.

What sort of dimensions and mounting-type are you looking for? Because I think I'd go with 3-4 reasonably-priced 12-bottle racks (or I'm considering 3-4 IKEA BEKVÄM racks with bulk bottles like these) rather than deal with the fuss for a larger single rack.

Though I did just find this rack while looking up the jars and maybe I'll just buy that right now.

Two reasons, both of which might not be as bad as I think: getting the spice rack and the glass bottles separately will end up costing more than the rack plus the bottles (from what I've seen so far in my searches), and I was hoping do all the purchases online which will make measuring the bottles to the rack difficult.

Also, no jars come with but I put one of these in my old house and loved it so much.

Could you get two (or more) racks, each holding 12 or fewer bottles, and hang them side by side?

That's plan B. I'm going under the assumption that one rack holding X bottles costs less than two racks holding X/2 bottles.

This is a situation in which I would Ikea hack it or build it myself. Wall mounted spice racks aren't too hard, and there are lots and lots of guides online.

Buy any size/shape board you want, paint it with magnetic paint, and use magnetic spice jars/tins. (Or paint the wall or cabinets, use the side of the fridge, use a whiteboard, etc.) Tons of possibilities.

Price might be a little higher per container, depending on what you find, but it'll be the most-flexible option possible if you ever move, want to re-arrange. Plus, you can get some now, and add more as time goes by.

Google "magnetic spice tin". Definitely has visual appeal.

(I just thought of this to answer your question, but I've been trying to decide how to deal with spices myself. Thank you! I've figured it out now!)

Oh... and an even less costly do-it-yourself option.

use magnetic spice jars/tins

This works well for us. We bought a couple of kits and stick them to a metal sheet I put on the inside of a door cabinet.

I saw these SmartJars at MakerFaire a couple weekends ago.

The 25 pack is $60 which is more than $50. Not sure how many more than 12 you are looking for. Maybe not as pretty as some of the other options, though. Might also provide inspiration for a DIY solution (particularly if you are in to 3D printing or have access to a printer).

Here is a variation on the DIY magnetic racks mentioned above. It is not under $50 but she lists some cheaper sources of magnets than what she found and lists her source of bottles, etc. so you might be able to do some variation of this for less. She lists her bottles as being just 64 cents each.

She also bought the stainless steel piece that she is putting them on. Maybe you can skip that and magnet them to the side of the fridge, or something, and that would eliminate part of the expense?

If you decide to go the piecemeal route, this is a good source for jars & tins: specialtybottle.com

If I was a more brave carpenter I'd make my own. But I sort of suck (despite the preponderance of tools).

I just wanted to point out that I loved the title of your post as well, and am hoping you are not Harkonnen slime.

Here are some from the Container Store:
One
Two

You can purchase online with regular or same day delivery, or you can order online and pick up in store (Midtown East or Chelsea).

I don't know your aesthetic at all, but I had a serious spice organization issue (I have like 14,000 different spices), and what ended up working best for me was using mismatched jars. This way, I can have bigger containers for my more-used spices and teeny little ones for frou frou stuff like saffron, plus I have a quick visual reference (cardamom is in a short fat jar with strawberries on the lid, dill in a weird curvy spice jar with a green lid, stuff like that). And most of the jars are just smallish jars that other things, like condiments or other spices, came in. Also, if you have thrift stores nearby, there are always spice jars and things there. A lot of people hoard funny little jars, too, so maybe you could put the word out that you need some. Most of mine I didn't pay for, at least discretely.

I keep mine in slide out boxes in a cupboard, but for wall storage, you could use either a regular small shelving unit (something with a lip or a crossbar, I guess, to keep them from tumbling off, or maybe a wall mounted wire basket thingy like a larger version or multiples of this.

I bought 60 hard plastic test tubes with tops off Amazon.com, and velcroed them to my kitchen walls in rows that are easy to access while cooking. Then I decanted spices into them and labelled them with wipeoff markers. Washable, resuable, and although the spices are being exposed to light and heat, the fact you're decanting into a smaller container means that you go through the spices quickly enough that they don't degrade.

Plus guests love it.

Oh and I DEFINITELY spent less than $50. It was probably more like $30 or even less if you can find Velcro in larger bits than the ones they sell at Walmart.
