Trans questions (Houston)

Looking for recommendations for services for a family member who is at the very beginning of transitioning from male to female.

A member of my family wants to transition MtF in Houston, Texas. Can anyone recommend (or recommend against) a doctor or clinic who is willing to prescribe hormones? I can find websites online for a couple, but I worry about trusting them without hearing from patients or friends of patients who have been happy with them.

My questions are similar to those in an earlier post, MtF in Texas seeking transition resources, but for Houston, not Austin, and asking for a family member who is in the early twenties:

1. What would be a good doctor or clinic, preferably within a few miles of the Medical Center. Does anyone know anything about the Dr. Hammill Transgender Health Clinic? I saw another doctor mentioned in an earlier post, but I don't know what to make of her very negative online reviews.

2. Can anyone recommend a good place for electrolysis? (Is it true that laser hair removal will not work for someone with medium-dark red hair?)

3. How does one find a good sperm bank, as for this previous question? How expensive would years of storage be? No actual plans to become a parent, but it would be nice in ten or twenty years to have that as an option.

Any other advice for a person in this situation would be welcome. Throwaway mailbox in case anyone doesn't want to post their answer: transquestions001@gmail.com

Monica Roberts of TransGriot is Houston-based. You may want to contact her or look through her blog for additional resources.

The Transgender Foundation of America is based in Houston. I have no personal experience with it but a friend who's originally from Houston has spoken positively of them. I would call them and/or go to one of their groups and ask for suggestions; asking at support groups is how many trans folks I know have gotten recommendations for doctors who will prescribe hormones.

I also have friends who have said very good things about TFA in Houston.

It is worth giving laser a try, simply because it is so much cheaper and faster than electro — if your relative discovers that it does work for her, that will be very good news, and so it's worth investing the $100 or so that it will cost to find out. Most redheads find that it doesn't work for them, but apparently some find that it does work.

Fairfax Cryobank, who I used, list their prices online. I have no idea whether those are lower or higher than average, but they should give you a ballpark sense of what it will cost. (I was pretty happy with Fairfax, but they don't seem to have a location in Houston.)
