Is Ford Madox Brown's lastname properly Brown or Madox Brown?

His father was Brown, his children were all Madox Brown, but some of his grandchildren used Madox as a middlename. It seems most references to Ford Madox Brown use his full name. But if I wanted only to use his lastname, what should it be?
