Ghost in my iPhone 5?

iPhone was working this morning without incident. This afternoon, with headphones in, my phone is randomly turning down the volume, all the way down to mute sometimes. The issue is slightly better, but not completely, when I take off my Mophie case. Neither of my volume buttons seem to be broken.
Does anyone have any idea what I might have done? Soft reset did not fix it. I could do a hard reset, but I really don't want to.

Did you slide your case over the side buttons (before the problem happened)? That can mess them up even if they appear fine.

If you carry your phone in your pocket, the connectors may be filling up with lint. When this happened to me, songs would pause unexpectedly all the time until I cleaned it out with a paperclip. It's possible that this could occur with the volume buttons too.

Best answer: Even if your aren't using a pair of headphones with a volume control if there is a short in one of the wires the phone could be "seeing" that as volume up/down commands. Id try another pair and see if the problem persists.

Is it possible you got some water in it?
Otherwise, I had this problem with my 4S and it turned out to be Apple's problem; they replaced it.

Response by poster: It looks like my headphones broke. :( My husband's headphones fixed the issue. Thanks guys.
