Gummy bear induced quest for Grateful Dead poster art

Please help me find that Grateful Dead poster or album art where...

My friend ate two gummy bears and couldn't stop going on about this Grateful Dead poster or album art where there is a couple looking into the universe and at the stars, and they are inside the GD skull. He was so excited that this was the best poster art ever (said he saw it in a GD art book) that I'd like to find it for him. He admits his memory may have adjusted the image a little bit, but still thinks it was the best thing he'd ever seen.

I've Googled for two days and hit up my hippiest friends and no luck.

Seen it? Know how I might find it? Any sort of help? Even pointing me to the book he might be talking about would be helpful.

Thanks, my little starry Mefites.

I've been doing some googling for this image for you, and haven't found anything that would fit, but realized it might help to suggest you look for "steal your face" instead of "grateful dead skull." Steal your face is the name of that skull image, or at least as its commonly referred to, and it may turn up something. You may already know this, but hey, what the hell, figured I'd throw it out there!

It's been a really long time since I was into the Dead - I can also reach out to some of my friends who are still big fans. But there is just so much artwork around that image, it may be really hard to find without finding that specific GD art book.

The sheer volume of GD artwork out there -- both official and fan-made -- makes this a daunting, if not impossible, task.

And yes, Steal Your Face was the name of the album that first featured the iconic skull-with-lightning-bolt image on its cover. That logo has since been repurposed in all kinds of ways, with the interior of the skull celebrating everything from sports teams to sunsets by the beach.

Yeah unfortunately I have to agree with mosk here- the image your friend saw is almost certainly an unlicensed fan-made piece, and will be pretty tough to track down on the net. You have to understand the sheer number of people on tour with this band by the time the 80's and 90's rolled around, all of them making and selling all sorts of clothing, food, art, drugs, etc.

I had a similar experience with a badass Grateful Dead t-shirt - the face part of the Stealie (as they're known) was the Darth Vader mask, and the circle was the Death Star. Below that design, in Star Wars font, it said "Dark Star". I covet that shit so hard, but alas I've never found any trace of it every again...

Aaaanyways your best bet is to help your friend track down the art book and go from there.

Best answer: Searching "Space your face" may get you better results (with the universe inside the skull).
