VPN possibilities?

We've cut the cable cord, but sorely miss big sporting events. Watched world cup through round of 16 on univision, then signed up for VPN to continue watching via CBC.ca. Would like to catch FIBA tournament, champions league, etc., but tough to track these things down.
Does anyone do a guide for obtaining streaming broadcasts in this way? Most searches end up with what look like malware swamps. If no collection of listings, has anyone had good experience obtaining broadcasts through national public TV sites or others via VPN? If I've just suggested a good web business for someone, I'll provide contact information for forwarding royalties on request. Thanks.
