So, I hear you re-name cats here....

I adopted "Daisy" from the local shelter. She's not a "Daisy" in looks or personality and I'd like to call her something else.

Her nick-name is "Princess Pretty Feathers No Bitem Whiskers"-- but that's a mouthful and more a term of endearment than it is something I want to call out to get her to come out from under the couch. I'd prefer a proper girl's name, but am open to any name as long as it suits her.

She looks like a Beatrice to me, or maybe a Clara or Martha. I love giving animals old fashioned names. What is her personality, though? That would help.

Clarisse, Clarabell, Cl-errible, Clar-issima, Klara, Alles Klar Der Kitten-ssar.

I like names that can be then nickname fodder.

A daisy is also a marguerite: Marguerite, Margaret, Peggy (common nickname for Margaret), Marge, Meg, Molly, Greta, or May.

She's more of a Violet than a Daisy to me...
posted by three_red_balloons at 12:26 PM on September 5, 2014

Response by poster: BACKGROUND: Daisy was surrendered from a home with too many cats and she was neglected. She has skin issues and a hyper-sensitive reaction to being petted and/or groomed-- she bites. She's not violent or aggressive and only "bites" when pet too hard or groomed too much, but she did used to bite quite a bit and quite hard-- even drew a good amount of blood once and gave me two scars on my forearm that will last for years, but now she just gives gentle love nibbles. Her other nick-name is "Little Miss Biter Sioux".

She weighed in at a whopping 19 pounds (she was free fed), and her extra-long fur was so matted they had to shave large portions of her gorgeous floof. She didn't come out from under the couch for three weeks.

She is very, very sound and motion shy, shadows and the wind blowing the curtains freaks her out. She's absolutely terrified of men and large bags so she gets called "Skitty (short for skitterish) Kitty" and "Chicken/Chicken Baby" a lot. She keeps to herself and spends her time between laying under the couch and laying in front of the window in the sun. She won't seek me out, but if I sit in the middle of the floor she'll come over for grooming or play. She's an introvert, but very loving.

I absolutely love old-fashioned girl's names for her.

You could call her Nellie, one of my favorite old fashioned pet names. Since she's a bit timid, she would be your Nervous Nellie.

Response by poster: Thank you, but nothing solid yet... Feel free to keep throwing suggestions out there even if you played once already!!
I like Gretchen, but she seems to respond well to the "EE" sound of Dais-EE, so I'm kind of feeling: quinn/quinnie, grace/gracie, holly, charlotte/charlie, georgia/georgie, susan/susie-- She reminds me of a Black-eyed Susan... or a Tiger Lily, but Tiger Lily was my last cat, so I don't feel right using that. Although she was called Tigra, I could call Daisy Lily, but meh.

Wilhelmina, with Willy as a nickname. (A predecessor who also often was chic and fluffy.)
posted by gnomeloaf at 3:18 PM on September 5, 2014 [1 favorite]

My own lovely girl looks completely different, but her name might suit, because of the ee sound: Mimi. We named her because of the sad, tiny, little baby mewing sounds she made in the car on the way home for the first time: mee! mee! I often call her Mims or Mimsy.

She looks like a Sasha to me. Or perhaps an Abigail. Something kind of fancy and fussy. Maybe Jessica.

That cat is a Bonnie. I am only so positive about this because both her appearance and demeanor lead me to believe that she is the long lost twin of a cat that I had as a child whose name was bonnie.
posted by cheerwine at 5:05 PM on September 5, 2014 [1 favorite]

Dorothy? Old fashioned, storied, keeps the D and the eee sounds. (But cheerwine has me thinking "Bonnie" is the way to go for your beautiful floofy lass.)

If she's shy - Emily. After Emily Dickinson.

It has the "e" sound, it's an old-fashioned name that's still contemporary, and she'd be named after a graceful recluse.
